Another Terrific Summer in the Street

August 18, 2010

To the Editor:

The eighth season of the 'Summer in the Street' series came to a close after a bounty of music and more was experienced on Pleasant Street this year.

The program featured an eclectic mix of music that turned the street over to new, as well as established musicians and bands. The pedestrian-friendly street closure, part of our original focus, allows even our youngest music lovers to go dancing in the street. Yes, we are Pro Portsmouth… We saw friends and neighbors out for a stroll or with chair and coffee in hand ready to enjoy the music for the evening. Lots of interesting comments from visitors - from all over - who absolutely loved the energy and vitality of music on the street.

A special shout out to Liberty Mutual and their "No Phone Zone" initiative encouraging drivers to put their phones down and stop texting/talking while driving and to the "Save Our Bridges" group - we loved selling your T-shirts!

As always, folks who helped out along the way need to be acknowledged: our Department of Public Works - setting up and breaking down like clockwork - an event organizer's dream, the Board members and Volunteers who were a Pro Portsmouth presence each week and last, but not least, to John Bohenko who listened to the plan back in 2002 and helps us make it a reality each year.

Of course, we couldn't support our performers without the funding provided by our Sponsors - for the 2010 series thanks go out to the McLane Law, Piast Technology, Infinite Imaging and our Program Partners Irving Oil and Isles of Shoals Steamship Company

And although the Summer is not officially over, we now turn our attention to December: next up for Pro Portsmouth - First Night® Portsmouth 2011. For information on how to be a part of our programs, go to www.proportsmouth.org

Pro Portsmouth Unveils 2010
Market Square Day Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. Thursday, May 27, 2010. Market Square Day and Pro Portsmouth, the group producing the event, both turn 33 this year. "An odd year," says Barbara Massar, Executive Director of PPI, "You've passed the big 3-0, you're nowhere near 40, but you're clearly seen as a grown up. You have more responsibility and more is expected of you." And so it is that with the 33rd Annual Market Square Day Festival and 10K Road Race - Pro Portsmouth will deliver as expected.  The pre-Festival activities surrounding the event got under way today with Pro Portsmouth unveiling the 2010 Market Square Day Logo.

Pro Portsmouth's Executive Director Barbara Massar thanked the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible - in particular several of the long term partners like the Title Sponsor of the Road Race, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics. Access returns to Market Square Day as the Road Race Title Sponsor for a sixth year. According to the Staff at Access, "working with Pro Portsmouth allows us an opportunity to really connect with our Community. The Market Square Day 10K is such an important part of the day…we truly help get the day kick-started."

Port City Nissan/Suzuki was also singled out for their support as the Official Vehicle of the MSD 10K. "Port City's support pre-dates my tenure," noted Massar, who started on Staff in 2001. "The folks there are great and we are fortunate to have them with us." According to Massar, Liberty Mutual, Oakhurst Dairy and Coca Cola have supported the event for the past decade. "It's a tribute to both sides - there's respect, support and a belief that we're all in this together as key components in our community."

Festival and Race Sponsors also include this year's Program Partners, Irving Oil and Isles of Shoals Steamship Co. They are joined by Lonza, Runner's Alley, PowerAde and VitaminWater.

It takes hundreds to make MSD happen - a variety of Volunteer opportunities are open. Information regarding Volunteering for MSD is available by contacting Anne Lynch at 610-5530 or volunteer@proportsmouth.org

This year's Market Square Day Historic Walk takes place on Friday, June 11th at 6:00pm.  The Walk begins at Market Square in front of the North Church.

Something new that's actually a throwback…A Spaghetti Dinner will be hosted by South Church in their Fellowship Hall (292 State Street) on Friday evening from 5 - 7pm. Prices are $8/Adult, $5/Senior and kids under 12, $5. Come out and Carbo Load!

Market Square Day features entertainment throughout the day on three stages. Various acts will fill the Downtown with music and dance. "We're very pleased to work with the artists from our 'unplugged' event," said Massar. "Nickie & Charlie Farr, The Alexanders and NSI will join such MSD mainstays as Salt River and Truffle…a musical feast."

An abundance of crafters, local businesses and food vendors will set up 'shop' on the streets of Portsmouth. Over 150 will be on hand for this year's festival.

The Press Conference introduced Chuck McLean as the 2010 Logo Artist. Chuck's design was chosen from nearly 50 submissions. The logo will be featured on all Race and Volunteer T-shirts as well as the Festival T-shirt which will be available at the Pro Portsmouth booth in Market Square during the event. Chuck received a check for $300 for the winning design; second place went to Ian Ball ($125) and third ($75) to Elissa von Letkemann. McLean's work was featured on the 2005 logo which celebrated the Portsmouth Peace Treaty.

Parking restrictions do take place in Downtown Portsmouth beginning at 4:00am on Saturday, June 12th. Streets will be posted on Friday, June 11th to indicate where parking is prohibited during the festival. Parking restrictions will be enforced and vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense. The Parking Garage offers a flat fee of $5.00 from the hours of 6:00am - 2:00pm and $3.00 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Shuttle service provided by First Student Transit/Pro Portsmouth runs from the overflow Lot at the Fox Run Mall (across from the JC Penny/Lens Crafters side of Mall) to Hanover Street across from the Hilton Garden Inn (Hanover Street Bus Stop) in Downtown Portsmouth. The shuttle runs from 8:30am - 4:30pm.

The event, often referred to as the unofficial start to Summer on the Seacoast, draws on nearly 2,000 runners and competitive walkers (NEW CATEGORY) for the 10K race and 80,000 festival-enthusiasts to the heart of the City. The Road Race starts at 9am in Market Square. For the second consecutive year, the Festival runs from 9am through 4pm.

Children's Day returns to Portsmouth!

Letter to the Editor:

Have you ever spent a sleepless night before a dinner or party that you planned? As the host, you worry about the food, the beverages, is your home presentable, but most nerve-wracking: will everybody or anybody show up and, will they have a good time?

Such was my anxiety before the return of Children's Day on May 2nd. After all, Pro Portsmouth hadn't actually produced the event since 2007 and we all know that memories are short and a two year absence might mean that folks had moved on and found other things to do on the first Sunday in May. Oh, and of course there is the weather - will it cooperate?

Thankfully, you showed up, we had a glorious weather day and, happily, Children's Day returned to Portsmouth.

An estimated 10,000 children - and their families - took part in the Children's Day festivities. With activities ranging from crafting your own pirate eye patch at the Moffatt-Ladd House, to a visit with Calvin the Whale, courtesy of Irving Oil, the Day was filled with fun for all.

We would especially like to thank our Dunk Tank participants - good sports all - George Shea (Principal - New Franklin), John Lyons (Attorney), Steve Marchand (Former Mayor - Portsmouth), Yankee Fan, Tom Cantwell and Jill LeMay (Principal - Dondero). I think that we may have hit on a fundraiser that all can get behind…Market Square Day - anyone, anyone?

The return of Children's Day was as a result of the generosity of our 'Shareholders' who rose to the occasion when Pro Portsmouth asked for support. From the first contributor - Steve Alie, to the last - Bob's Clam Hut, we owe many thanks.

The 2010 Children's Day Shareholders were: Irving Oil, Service Credit Union, Lonza, Treehouse Toys, Isles of Shoals Steamship Co., Ad Cetera, Infinite Imaging, The Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Alie Jewelers,

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Bob's Clam Hut, G.Willikers!, Gymboree Play and Music of RyeNH,  Association for the Blind/Portsmouth Lions Club, PortsmouthNH.com, SeacoastKidsCalendar.com, Seacoast Mothers Association, Sheds USA and Tugboat Alley.

In kind sponsors included: Moe's Italian Sandwiches and the Portsmouth Pizza Factory - thanks for 'fueling' our Volunteers.

Thanks to those who generously donated items to our Free Kid's Raffle including: The Children's Museum, Strawbery Banke, The Friendly Toast, Bowl-O-Rama, On Site Family Martial Arts, Me & Ollie's, Treehouse Toys and Tugboat Alley

To all of the activity host sites - thank you! The Children's Map was chock full of fun destinations due to your booths and open doors on Children's Day.

As always, we are grateful for the terrific working relationship we have with The City of Portsmouth - to City Manager, John Bohenko and all of the dedicated City Department Heads - thank you!

And of course, where would we be without our Volunteers? Thanks everybody! You are Pro Portsmouth! A special shout out to our friends at Traip Academy who played a critical part in 'hosting' our friends from Character Island - thank you.

As an independent non-profit 501c (3) organization, Pro Portsmouth relies completely on the Community - the businesses and individuals - for financial support. We are grateful for the support of so many and hope that many more will join us in our programming efforts. Next up - the 33rd Annual Market Square Day & the 10K Road Race on Saturday, June 12th, Summer in the Street and First Night® Portsmouth 2011.

For details on how to become a sponsor or get involved with Pro Portsmouth's activities, including Volunteering at our events, call Barbara Massar at 610-5521 or visit www.proportsmouth.org

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Coordinator, Anne Lynch - thanks everybody!

Pro Portsmouth Unveils the 2010 Children's Day Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. April 20, 2010. We're back…Pro Portsmouth held a Press Conference on Wednesday, April 20th to introduce the 2010 Children's Day logo artist and unveil this year's logo.

The Press Conference, which took place at Service Credit Union, one of this year's Shareholders, introduced Annika Strand as the artist whose work was selected for the 2010 logo. Annika, age 10,hales from the Port City. Her logo artwork will be featured on the Volunteer T-shirts, the Children's Day Map and Poster and the Pro Portsmouth website.

In what has become a Children's Day tradition, we asked our community artists to design a logo for this family-friendly event. Annika's logo depicts a personal goal - to successfully perform a cartwheel!

Children's Day returns after a two year hiatus; the event was cancelled in 2008 due to a storm. In 2009 citing lack of financial support, Pro Portsmouth elected not to produce the event. Thanks to the support of Shareholders - both large and small - Children's Day returns to the Port City in 2010.

The event, which takes place on Sunday, May 2nd from Noon - 4:00pm, begins when friends from Character Island arrive in Portsmouth aboard the M/V Thomas Laighton at The Isles of Shoals Steamship Co. Activities abound from A to Z as all are invited to follow the Children's Day map which takes them all over Downtown where they can enjoy crafts, face painting, bowling and more.

Entertainment takes place at the Block Party on Pleasant. This year's schedule of performers includes Mary Kaye & Professor von Wienerschnitzel, the Seacoast Civic Dance Company and, thanks to Service Credit Union, The Money Mammals.

Winner of the Dr. Toy award and touted by the Wall Street Journal as "showing children the joy of saving, sharing, and spending smart", The Money Mammals are brought to you by Service Credit Union's Financial Education program.  The interactive puppet show follows Joe the Monkey and Piggs the Bank as they save their allowance for Clara J. Camel's birthday present.  Kids laugh out loud while learning concepts such as money transactions, saving allowance money, and sharing in the form of gifts through catchy songs and funny dialogue.

Irving Oil partners with the New England Aquarium to bring Calvin, the North American Right Whale, to Children's Day. The 42' life-sized whale, along with other Aquarium exhibits will join in the festivities at The Connie Bean Recreation Center on Daniel Street.

Children's Day Shareholders include: Irving Oil, Lonza, Isles of Shoals Steamship Co., Service Credit Union, Treehouse Toys, Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Alie Jewelers, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Bob's Clam Hut, G.Willikers!, Gymboree Play and Music of Rye, NH Association for the Blind, Portsmouth Lions Club, PortsmouthNH.com, SeacoastKidsCalendar.com, Seacoast Mothers Association, Sheds USA, Tugboat Alley, Ad Cetera Graphics, Infinite Imaging and PromoCentric.

Thanks go out to the City of Portsmouth, City Manager, John Bohenko and the various City Department heads for their support of Children's Day

The Children's Day map is available at the event and on the Pro Portsmouth website www.proportsmouth.org

First Night® Portsmouth Logo - Best in Show!

PORTSMOUTH, NH. April 14, 2010.  Pro Portsmouth, the non-profit organizer of the area's largest festivals, recently received terrific news from Boston. Officials from First Night USA have advised the group that their 2010 Logo/button design was selected as the best in the nation.

The logo represents the work of local artist, Carolyn Vibbert. Her logo was selected from over 50 submissions and it was featured on Pro Portsmouth's event buttons, apparel and collateral.

Currently, 88 cities in 29 States are members of the First Night USA alliance. Pro Portsmouth became a part of the First Night movement in 1986.

About Pro Portsmouth, Inc.

Pro Portsmouth Goes Unplugged

Portsmouth, NH. April 7, 2010. With several of their biggest events just around the corner, Pro Portsmouth is taking a different tact for a new concert event in April. According to Executive Director, Barbara Massar, the event is revolutionary. Why? "Well, we don't close a single street, the concert event is completely indoors and it will only last for about 2.5 hours!"

Who said that Pro Portsmouth only knows how to close streets?

For an organization that has become synonymous with large-scale events' production,
this concert, unplugged: a Pro Portsmouth concert, at South Church definitely represents a bit of a left turn: it is a much smaller, more intimate happening that will focus on some of the area's new talent in one the artistic community's most beloved Downtown venues, South Church.

The event, sponsored by The Green Monkey, Brazo, The Sheraton Harborside and The River WXRV, features a bounty of local music: NSI and Nickie Farr & The Country Rats with The Alexanders, Regina and Dave Leshinski.

According to Massar, the evening will have an unplugged sensibility to it, but as far as categorizing the music you'll hear - she won't go there. "Everyone on the program for "unplugged" is truly talented and it's difficult to put a label on their music. I'd have to say that everyone should come on out to enjoy an evening of acoustic rock/folk/pop/Americana…a veritable cornucopia of sound."

Tickets for the April 17th concert are $9 (Students & Seniors), $12 (General Admission) and can be purchased online at: www.proportsmouth.org/unplugged  Doors open at 7pm; the concert begins at 7:30pm.

Proceeds benefit the year-round programming of Pro Portsmouth. Pro Portsmouth, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and sustaining the vitality of Portsmouth's arts, culture and history through events and community collaboration.

Pro Portsmouth, Inc. is a Non-profit classified as a 501c (3) by the Internal Revenue Service. All sponsorships and donations directly benefit the efforts of Pro Portsmouth and its Mission to promote the Arts, Culture, History and Community of Portsmouth and the Seacoast.

Pro Portsmouth, Inc. announces the Market Square Day 2010 Logo Contest

PORTSMOUTH, NH. March 24, 2010. The Seacoast's premier Downtown-festival organization, Pro Portsmouth will produce the 33rd Annual Market Square Day Festival and Road Race on Saturday, June 12th. Once again, Pro Portsmouth hopes that the craftspeople, artists, musicians and other talented folk of the region take to the streets in June.

Each year we look to the artists of the Seacoast to create a logo for Market Square Day. Once again, this is our 'Call to Logo Artists' and your opportunity to create a logo that lives on for years - Market Square Day T-shirts, anyone?

For over three decades, Market Square Day has taken place in the heart of the City. Pro Portsmouth looks to the artists of the community to put their signature on the 2010 Logo design and message.

Themes that always (and still do) resonate for Pro Portsmouth are the four 'keys' of its Mission - Arts, Culture, History & Community.  We ask that you incorporate the text 'Market Square Day 2010' - into your design.
